Short prose trolleybus journey 2015-07-03

Vilija Virkutytė

Anthology Trolleybus Stories (Trolleybus Stories, 2014, Kaunas: Kitos Knygos publishing house) has indeed reached its goal - it exposed the myth that short Lithuanian prose is lyrical and provincial and that writers are poor storytellers. The travel itinerary composed of fifteen short stories, helped to make sure that Lithuanian literature can be urban, intriguing and full of humor and imagination.

Discovering my and your Vilnius 2015-06-23

Urtė Navalinskaitė

Although it is stated in the website of the book of Justinas Žilinskas “My Vilnius” that it is dedicated to elder children and teenagers, the author does not agree and assures that it may be enjoyed by grown-ups (not necessarily from Vilnius) too. It is a story about children Aistė and Simas discovering Vilnius along with the mysterious Chronicler. The book offers interesting graphical solutions and illustrations and, of course, history of Vilnius.

Still from the film “Nymphomaniac” (2013)

Embarrassing theme 2015-06-23

Ramūnas Čičelis

Love and sexual relations in the films “Fifty Shades of Grey” (2015, director Sam Taylor-Johnson) and “Nymphomaniac” (2013, director Lars von Trier) – this is the embarrassing theme of the article. Lithuanian critics are persistently silent about the first film, while several reviews have been written about the film of the Danish director in our country.

Orientalism in painting: between cruelty and beauty (part 2) 2015-06-15

Marius Vyšniauskas

It may be stated that art of the 19th century is first of all the “silent” critic of the society that embodies the existential anxiety of the modern man visually. A painting had to shock an individual: a person as a passive observer disappears, his and the painter’s conscience merge. Therefore, orientalism, which reached the artistic apogee in the 19th century, did not stay indifferent to the sores of the time: abolitionism, nationalism, war propaganda and still remained high fashion of the time.

A. Jakučiūnas, „It may be that literature teaches one not to read“ 2015-06-08

Elvina Baužaitė

Prose writer Andrius Jakučiūnas says, "Probably there had never been anything better said than the banality that an author should write about what is interesting and important to him. And whether his works will be interesting to others and if it matches the so-called spirit of the epoch is simply a coincidence, a fate."

Michael Chekhov's method: "psychological gesture", atmosphere and creative inspiration 2015-06-03

Justinas Kalinauskas

Every actor, who realizes the principles of the method, should discover or develop his own technique, which would reflect his individual acting dynamic best. This principle of methodology perfectly illustrates M. Chekhov's vision of "tomorrow’s actor" - a secure, independent, universal creator, who is able to expand the boundaries of theatrical art.

Muddy water of culture while catching fish and dragons 2015-06-02

Elvina Baužaitė

Undinė Radzevičiūtė novel "Fishes and Dragons" won this year's European Union Prize for Literature, which aims to enrich the translations and thus expand the visibility of authors. Such evaluation inspires to once again - or maybe for the first time, if the reader is lost among the multitude of books - open this novel.

Forts "protecting" Kaunas: present and future 2015-05-20

Laura Rimkutė

After visiting Kaunas forts, it becomes obvious that Kaunas has a great treasure of heritage. Although Fort was not beneficial during the First World War, if fully arranged now, Kaunas could boldly appear next to European heritage. Not only famous for great interwar architecture, but also as a unique example of military history with its intriguing legends.

"100 and two" - "in between" being and nothingness 2015-04-28

Elvina Baužaitė

On the last page of the book "100 and two" it is stated that the author perceives the published works as a new creative phase. It is a starting point of something else, the line, separating past and future, being and nothingness. It is interesting to observe the emergence of new, to be, to participate in the transformations, because poetry, after all, is a language of being, so let's try to listen and hear what do K. Navakas poems are saying.

He was the first foreigner in the Republic of Two Nations and a monarch, who failed to fulfill formal obligations. Now, already a historical exhibition of Adolfas Vaičaitis "Full Moon" fit all the main graphic art periods of the artist from a bygone era. At a small but spacious exposition we can trace the dotted lines of a long creative period: works from the college times, the graduations works, social didactic prewar posters and war time book illustrations. The after war periods abroad - in Germany and Australia - were also presented.

The first Kaunas International Graphics Biennial "Culture Line" that takes place at the Mykolas Žilinskas Art Gallery and Kaunas Picture Gallery, also could not do without nominations. When so many authors from different countries are presented with their works rendered in diverse graphics techniques, nominations help in arranging them.

Already a 20th "Cinema Spring." In no other Lithuanian film festival will you see so many trendy people, who look like they had just stepped down from the cover of the magazine; big and small celebrities, sponsor's advertisements broadcasted in various ways, people of cinema, program related festival events and bustle. No wonder that such a massive event receives many and very diverse opinions. Big festival, perhaps, should be like that - offering both an avant-garde and culinary cinema.

Conversation with Giedrė Kazlauskaitė about life and other things 2015-03-27

I was in my late teens when I first learned about Giedrė Kazlauskaitė - one friend of mine had fallen in love with her because of her texts in "Šiaurės Atėnai" and dreamed  of talking to her if he ever saw her live (he never did). Subsequently, our paths diverged and G. Kazlauskaitė published two poetry books, received awards and became the editor of "Šiaurės Atėnai." While I exceeded my friend for dozens of times already, this is the first time I am talking so much and so publicly with G. Kazlauskaitė.

The impact of the Great War to the emerging Lithuanian state 2015-03-25

Marius Vyšniauskas

Legacy of the Great War in Lithuania is simply deleted, emphasizing it as a stage that led to country's independence without examining enemy armies that operated there, battles and biographies of notable personalities. Meanwhile Lithuania could boast about the imprints of European-wide celebrities, who led the country into a changed world. It is especially relevant now, since 2014 - 2018 were announced as years of the Great War.

However, nowadays, after looking at these countries, we see a slightly different situation in how the castles are used and preserved.

Falling meteorites and sub-consciousness 2015-01-09

Neringa Krikščiūnaitė

The exhibition of Mindaugas Pridotkas “Self-portrait with Hands” expresses by its title what it will be about. It may be read as “self-portrait” made by hands and as information about the exhibition in which sculptures of self-portraits and hands are displayed. Both variants are intriguing.

Monument or heritage? Kaunas of the 19th century in the 21st century 2015-01-07

Kastytis Rudokas

The author states that emphasis on the monument prevails in Kaunas while speaking on heritage questions. Still, he names the positive impulse – the attempt to receive the European Heritage Label to Kaunas modern architecture and to seek for the recognition of UNESCO. These aims encourage the public to think about heritage and to search for methods of realising our past. The idea of the city to choose culture as the needed impulse for the city is surely correct according to the author.

Method of Michael Chekhov: tools of role characterisation 2015-01-05

The process of characterisation is focused on the use of external means and concentrated images striving for the internal reaction of the body in which new psychological nuances and statuses close to the portrait of the created role are disclosed. This principle indicates the specific kid of methodology which refers to the fact that the main load is on the physical access and process of visualisation rather than the psychological analysis of the role.

The second premiere of the 95th season of the National Kaunas Drama Theatre embodying the slogan “History – anew!” is one more return of a play staged at the beginning of the eighth decade. While “Barbora” was staged by the director Jonas Jurašas himself for the second time, the performance “Biography: A Game” created by Vytautas Čibiras in 1974 could not be repeated by the same director. The new version of “Biography: Acting” returns the director Gintaras Varnas to NKDT and the theatre history.

Concept of the Other World in Europe of the Middle Ages 2014-12-15

Marius Vyšniauskas

The Middle Ages are closely related with various mystical legends, ghosts, cult of the dead. Even the special type of sermons de mortuis (about the dead) spread in those times – virtues of some dead person were aggrandized and sins were forgotten in such sermons. Therefore, the author speaks about such believes that were alive in Western Europe and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Works displayed in the painting exhibition of Milda Gailiūtė “Vienna” at Kaunas Meno Parkas gallery may be divided into two groups: works created in Vienna in 2012 and works created in Lithuania in 2014. The artist was on the art residency in the capital of Austria two years ago after winning the Young Painter Prize in 2011. M. Gailiūtė lived and created for three months there; therefore, the aim of the exhibition is to show the cityscape, to reveal emotions of the artist in a foreign country, to present views and memories that arose after returning to Lithuania.

Wooden Kaunas: phenomenon of Lower Šančiai 2014-12-01

Laura Rimkutė

Separate historical suburbs of wooden houses have been forming the face of Kaunas from the first half of the 20th century. Each suburb has the prevailing type of wooden houses determined by social conditions, cultural traditions and the urban situation of the location. While summer houses prevail in Panemunė and more modern architectural  solutions and more abundant decorations may be noticed in wooden houses of Žaliakalnis, the Lower Šančiai and Vilijampolė were inhabited by workers mostly.

Agnė Cesiulienė

The book “Room of Jewish Things” (Žydiškų daiktų kambarys) of Audronė Urbonaitė presented in the Book Fair this year received much attention. It is the third novel of the writer. The first was written on the basis of personal experiences while the writer fought with cancer, the second novel was also based on personal experience of having a yellow-skinned granddaughter. This time the story was borrowed from a friend, but feelings belong to the author herself.

The author resolved to watch almost the entire programme of the festival Gaida this year and felt its festive solemnity. This feeling was reinforced by the programme full of large volume works, monumental forms and outstanding personalities. The impression was created that this festival was exceptional by these features as compared to previous festivals.

Mechanisms of imagination in actor’s creative work 2014-11-19

Justinas Kalinauskas

Imagination in particular should be considered the most important component and starting point trying to realise how the tools of full-rate creation are formed gradually in the methodology of M. Chekhov.

Marius Vyšniauskas

The article is about tombs and memorial stelae in churches of Italy, France and Lithuania, Kaunas in particular. Speaking about Lithuania, the author regrets that we do not have such important war or cultural memorials that could equal to West Europe. Even the rulers buried in the cellars of Vilnius Cathedral are not accessible to everybody, while the number of tombs that may be seen by visitors of churches is even smaller in Kaunas.

Search of Kaunas modern identity that started from the dream about UNESCO 2014-11-14

Austėja Masiokaitė

The Council of Kaunas City Municipality approved of the decision this summer to strive for an ambitious aim – to become a UNESCO city. Although it is a long process requiring finance and political will and it can prolong or disappear in the municipality clerks’ drawers, one victory has already been achieved by it: Kaunas inter-war modern architecture has been named as the feature of Kaunas which we want to present to the world.

Vanishing wooden Kaunas: houses of railwaymen 2014-11-10

Rytis Mekiša

As the cycle of articles on Kaunas wooden architecture is continued, attention should be paid to one exceptional example of Kaunas wooden architecture – houses of railwaymen. Objects of architecture of this type are not abundant; therefore, they should be discussed separately. The aim of this article is to reveal the history of appearance of railwaymen’s houses, their typical architectural forms, to present the usage and status.

Visiting Kaunas wooden houses: a walk in Vaidoto Street 2014-11-06

Asta Raškevičiūtė

As one passes along Vaidoto Street in Panemunė, Kaunas, the eye is caught by various wooden houses built in the 20th century. These are small cottages and rather large houses of rented flats, buildings of a city inhabitant’s house type, buildings of oblong plan, outhouse buildings further from the street. Some of them have been covered in plastic lags, others have been reconstructed, still others are forlorn and falling apart.

Discovered time and gifts of exile 2014-11-04

Ramūnas Čičelis

The idea of the author to write this text was born while reading the novel of the French literature classic Marcel Proust "In Search of Lost Time" (seven parts of the novel were published in 1913-1927). The issue of time is the main and central theme in creative work of exile artists too. Making an experiment, the author strives to check in the article whether it is possible to form the analysis method of visual art from the verbal story of the aforementioned novel.

The conception and evolution of Chekhov‘s method. 2014-10-28

Justinas Kalinauskas

In Brief: In the context of the Russian theater of early 20th century, M. Chekhov could be considered to be one of the most prominent drama actors of that period. He played a significant role in the formation of the modern theatrical tradition. But M. Chekhov’s career in theater theory and pedagogy relates to much broader contexts of Western Europe and USA.

In Brief: After such performance it becomes really clear that it does not matter which boy puts on a cap that symbolizes the crown, which one of them will take the golden microphone that depicts a scepter – nothing is going to change. We will still see how a self-absorbed king is wanking while admiring his reflection. It seems, that this is what the play intended to convey.

The conception chosen by the organisers of the watercolour biennial (head of the project –  Eugenijus Nalevaika) was named as resonance. The laconic and rather abstract title of the exhibition “Resonance” interests and intrigues both participants of the exhibition and the organisers of the event. The most diverse technical possibilities of watercolour and the creative searches of a wide circle of artists using acrylic and oil painting techniques are presented in the 5th international watercolour biennial.

The craving to capture the human being as an acting and thinking being on the surface marks the exceptional features of our species and the wish to remain immortalised in time. Perhaps this is the reason why portraitists of all times strove to reveal the internal world of the human being, to show what hides behind the face.

Classics does not get old? You are joking, some educated spectator would say after watching two premieres of state theatres presented in Lithuania this autumn. The theatrical season started as usual this year – with time-tested classical works staged on big stages by well-known directors of elder generation: performance of Jonas Vaitkus “King Lear” presented at the Lithuanian Russian Drama Theatre and performance “Barbora” of Jonas Jurašas at the National Kaunas Drama Theatre.

The fact that essential changes take place inside of the festival, that attempts are made to form its identity anew, that the organizers are getting away from the competitive fight with other main Lithuanian film festivals is most probably testified by the much shorter programme of the festival of this year: in addition to the retrospective of the Hungarian classic Jancsó and the main programme, Ukrainian films were shown. The shorter programme is not a bad phenomenon by itself, it could be the chance to raise the level of the festival. However, did the 8th festival succeed to do this?

Promises make a good supplement to food. They may be of different consistence, colour and flavour. They may grant exceptional qualities to food and may spoil it. What does it have in common with sauce? The word sauce was used as a joke before the premiere of the performance “Promise at Dawn at Kaunas National Drama Theatre on October 4 and 5. Even the reading of the novel “Promise at Dawn” of Romain Gary did not help to forget the joke. Still, after watching the performance no thoughts about gravies remained.

The autumn part of art photography festival Kaunas Photo rallied a big crowd of enthusiasts and professionals of photography to exhibition halls. The festival organised in Kaunas corresponds to all features typical of contemporary photography festivals: it attracted attention of visitors by its large scale (three exhibitions at Kaunas M. Žilinskas Art Gallery, two expositions organised in the open-air in public city spaces), events creating festive mood (opening events of exhibitions, meetings with authors, nights of photography) and discussions and lectures of professionals for the audience interested in photography deeper.

The trouble is that even the biggest name cannot neutralise the heavy historical load that is carried by the communistic symbols. While the communistic symbols are still on the bridge, we should lift our heads and look at them well. If they appear unpleasant to our hours, we should stand for their removal.
