Still from the film “Nymphomaniac” (2013)

In brief: Love and sexual relations in the films “Fifty Shades of Grey” (2015, director Sam Taylor-Johnson) and “Nymphomaniac” (2013, director Lars von Trier) – this is the embarrassing theme of the article. Lithuanian critics are persistently silent about the first film, while several reviews have been written about the film of the Danish director in our country.

Considering the causes of silence or speaking (in a rather repressed manner in both cases), it becomes clear that it is unpleasant to speak about things that deviate from the so-called norm: there are no “healthy” and idyllic relations in the reviewed films.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” is considered by most viewers that bad that there is nothing to talk and write about. It is ostensibly worth watching with chips and coca cola in hands. Meanwhile, reviewers of “Nymphomaniac” contemplate whether the film is pornographic. Other reviewers emphasise that the film has a pretence to artistry but it is imperfect by its structure.

The author of this review does not justify himself by the lack of artistry or drawbacks in structure in both films, he watches and analyses films as works that unveil very serious problems of sexual disorders, hope to establish romantic relations without coercion and problems of the consumer society.
