MEETING CLASSICS AND OTHER ANTIQUITIES 2012-01-24

Ugnė Kraulaidytė

The show raises a question that unites painting and literature: what do the works and K. Donelaitis have in common? And questions stimulate contemplation.

TIREDNESS TO KNOW WHAT IS NEEDED AND TO DO WHAT IS EXPECTED 2012-01-20

Milda Kiaušaitė

The number of publications presenting works of photography alternativists has increased over recent years. The album ‘Kaunas Avant-garde Photography: The Last Decade of the Soviet Period’ was published by Kaunas Department of Lithuanian Union of Photographers and Lithuanian Art Museum in 2011. Seven authors are presented in the album that is full of different styles, emotional charges, moods and techniques.

VISUAL CHRONICLE OF LITHUANIAN HISTORY 2012-01-12

Ieva Dubikaitytė

‘Why is it Didelytė’s and not ours?’ – the writer Kazys Saja asks in the brand-new album ‘Gražina Didelytė’s Lithuania’. The graphic artist left us five years ago but her works still radiate life and love to the native land. Nine chapters of the album include a very broad chronological scale and present G. Didelytė’s outlook at the development of Lithuanian history. The artist’s creative heritage becomes a visual chronicle in the album that records the main political, cultural changes and most influential historical figures.

Z.DARGIENĖ'S EXHIBITION 'DELIVERED BY DREAMS - ABORIGINES' - FROM DREAMS TO DREAMS 2011-12-21

Renata Bartusevičiūtė

The exhibition ‘Delivered by Dreams – Aborigines’ is a peculiar interpretation of this unique culture. Mythology is relevant in the show: aborigines derive themselves from dreams; they come from dreams and return to them; they do not have one god. Aborigines worship their ancestors who created the Earth. Analysing the cultures, Z. Dargienė noticed that there were many symbols and metaphors living in all cultures.

INTERPRETATIONS OF WHITE IN THE 'COLOUR - MOOD - SYMBOL' EXHIBITION 2011-12-20

Austėja Bručaitė

Kaunas Balta Gallery has organised the festive exhibition-competition ‘Colour – Mood – Symbol’ for the third time already.  White colour is interpreted in the show by the Lithuanian artists who use various techniques in order to express the significance of white. Some authors associate it with purity and cleanness; others perceive it as a state of space for sacrality and contemplation or attempt to reveal the aesthetics of the colour.

Justina Paltanavičiūtė

The musicians of the Saulės Broliai believe that their music is capable of curing the depressed society. They always try to radiate good emotions and warmth, to share the joy of living.

I WILL KNIT ARMOUR FOR MYSELF 2011-12-15

Giedrė Legotaitė

The duet created an aesthetical and purified spectacle in the gallery. An everyday activity – knitting – was represented as a form of meditation in terms of affecting viewers. V. Tamoševičiūtė naked as a baby was sitting within white walls, in the circle of blue threads, indifferent towards the environment, ignoring the cold and tiredness (the performance 'Armour' took seven hours). Surrounded by sounds created by D. Pupkevičiūtė, she was knitting a scarf and transferring the viewers into a parallel world.

GLASS ART EXHIBITION VITRUM BALTICUM AT KAUNAS PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERY 2011-12-06

Vaida Viršutytė

The international Vitrum Balticum glass art project was organised in Lithuania for the fifth time. Glass art exhibitions are held in Lithuania rather rarely but they are welcomed and significant. Aims and conceptions of the Vitrum Balticum are interesting and purposeful. Since the largest textile biennial in Europe is already organised in Lithuania, it could be hoped that eventually we will have a big event of glass art too.

CONTRASTS IN THE EXHIBITION OF A. PETRAŠIŪNAITĖ AND A. DRAZDAUSKAITĖ 2011-12-03

Viktorija Liubinaitė

Antinomies define the exhibition of  A. Petrašiūnaitė and L. Drazdauskaitė the best: vivid – pastel, sharp – soft, personal – universal. Nature without human forms is inspiration to one of the artists, while another one is influenced by her own intimate and close surroundings. In any case, an individual world is created, open to wide interpretations. The duet represents harmony of contrasts from a poetical natural world to personal and hurtful experiences, coloured with a light irony.

CREATIVE TURNS OF AUŠRA ANDZIULYTĖ 2011-12-03

Agnė Kyguolytė

The anniversary exhibition of A.Andziulytė reflects the creative search, wanders and returns of the artist. The paintings refer to certain geographical places or objects but they are also full of space and mood that are accentuated by a specific material of tin. Signs of temporality (rivers, sunset, moon) remind us about the stream of time and fragility of moments of our existence.

TEMPERAMENTAL ODYSSEY OF COLOURS BY A. GALDIKAS 2011-12-01

Odeta Bormaitė

The display of the ‘Odyssey of Colours’ lets us get acquainted with the reserved, lyrical, mystical and passionate master of colours A. Galdikas. The exhibition is as if a colourful time travel with paintings of expressive and abstract colours.

DIFFERENT OUTLOOK AT A TOMATO IN THE WORK 'SHE LIKES TOMATOES' BY L. JONIKĖ 2011-11-30

Miglė Morkūnaitė

The work ‘She Likes Tomatoes’ distinguishes among other textile works in the exhibition by its playful and rather light topic. Other participants of the biennial examine global problems of the old and the contemporary world, existential experiences, childhood memories. In the meantime, the work of L. Jonikė invokes an elevated mood and makes forget about all troubles.

HORROR DRAMA AT KAUNAS STATE MUSICAL THEATRE: G. VERDI'S 'ATTILA' 2011-11-28

Justina Paltanavičiūtė

Only time will prove the popularity of G. Verdi's 'Attila'. The composer once said: ‘I write music to people, not critics’. So let this opera be evaluated not only by critics but also viewers.

THE AUTUMN SALON 2011 INTRODUCES THE 'NEW ART' 2011-11-28

Enrika Ragaliauskaitė

Inspired by the famous Paris show, the exhibition ‘Autumn Salon 2011’ was opened in Kaunas, the Meno Parkas Gallery, on the 23rd of November. One of the most important aims was to spread new approaches to art, to introduce the audience to various tendencies and perceptions of art. However, the show does not attempt to represent ‘absolute’ novelties or to evoke a revolution in the field of contemporary art.

BETWEEN EAST AND WEST. ‘GEORGE MACIUNAS AND BEYOND: FLUXUS NEVER STOPS’ 2011-11-25

Monika Jarulytė

It would be hard to say flatly, how much the Far East philosophy and the Western culture affected the Fluxus movement. Concrete facts prove such links but it is especially confirmed by the possibilities of real experiences, scenarios of happenings and creative experiments. The project organized by Kaunas Biennial showed that Fluxus can change not only the way of presenting art exhibitions but also the experiences of the everyday.

CONNECTING MEMORY IN THE INSTALLATION 'CLOUDS OVER KAUNAS' BY P. GILYTĖ 2011-11-21

Giedrė Legotaitė

Using similar components, P. Gilytė creates the most individual object – her personal city. The city as she knew it in the past and as she knows it now. With the help of inner images as a highly personal and authentic object of creating art, P. Gilytė examines the relativity of time in terms of every individual and their experience.

EXHIBITION 'SACRED SKETCHES' BY V. KAŠINSKAS - FOR PEOPLE INTERESTED IN RELIGIOUS ART 2011-11-18

Rūta Morkūnaitė

‘The sacred art goes underground gradually, by yielding ground to the postmodern art. Sacred art delimits significant things from the accessible, elementary ones that fit into the concept of profanity’, - artist V. Kašinskas says.

Ingrida Kazakevičiūtė, 4th year student of art criticism, Vytautas Magnus University

The author refuses to depict the material world. She prefers to accentuate the space surrounding the human being and the shoddiness of matter by leading the viewer towards metaphysical contemplation. Her painting reminds a bit the colour field painting of Mark Rothko – the brushstrokes and play of undertints create the impression of depth and specific mood, affect the viewer emotionally.

THE LANGUAGE OF RŪTA NAUJALYTĖ'S BEADS 2011-11-16

Toma Švažaitė

The bouquet of fancy experiments and individual improvisations were offered by Kaunas Biennial Textile’11 and especially the exhibition ‘Rewind Personal Story‘, displayed at M. Žilinskas Art Gallery in Kaunas. One of the most interesting textile works in the exhibition is the piece ‘09/03/1981’ by Lithuanian artist Rūta Naujalytė. An extraordinary technique, peculiar colours and a conceptual idea drew the attention of many visitors.

BREATH OF POSTMODERNISM IN PHOTOGRAPHY 2011-11-15

Renata Bartusevičiūtė

The death of photography, its decline and extinction were discussed many times but all those talks were empty. Photography participates in public and personal life so actively as never before. It documents the face of society and also creates its identity. What is contemporary photography and how could we find art in it?

Aleksandra Voronkova, 4th year student of art criticism

Illustrated stories by artist Kęstutis Kasparavičius were presented in Kaunas, Eglės Gallery, till the 6th of November. The exhibition drew into the world of illusions and fairy-tales and reminded of the past when we were like those tales’ characters, jumping over pools.

Renata Bartusevičūtė

I exhibited my cycle “The Lee” that was my protest against myself – the staging, the editing myself. The people seen in “The Lee” did not know they were being photographed. Such way of making photographs was the greatest happiness for me. Staging is a dull thing, you want more real experiences all the time“, - R. Rakauskas stated.

THE "PURGE" OF JONAS JURAŠAS – BETWEEN THE DIDACTIC SCYLLA AND FASHIONABLE CHARYBDIS 2011-10-31

Mindaugas Grigaitis, Justina Paltanavičiūtė

Soviet period is still a painful problem of our society. There are many positions and versions of the attitudes towards it.  Younger generations, that have not experienced Soviet times, create their images by hearsay. The topic of the Soviets could become a great source of artistic inspirations but only a few artists use it bravely. The performance “Purge” of Jonas Jurašas is a daring attempt to discuss the topic. His aim is to make Soviet traumas public, to speak about their effects and to declare the possibility of purge.

Austėja Masiokaitė

D. Zovienė doubts if the art publications will move to the digital space because it would not give any aesthetical experiences. Traditional published book is not flat; it is three-dimensional – as architecture.

TURNS OF SPACE AND LIGHT 2011-10-28

Renata Bartusevičiūtė

Space and light are two most important things to Aušra Andziulytė. „I always try to convey them and often with the help of the yellow colour. This colour is not absolutely real to me – it associates with light. Others say that space is blue; meanwhile I cannot imagine the blue space. The yellow colour reminds me of icons. Probably it is the intangible glint and lustre that help me create the sense of space. I always try to turn the flatness into space“, - the author says.

The 8th Textile Biennial has dressed Kaunas in textile art. Works of art, displayed in spaces of museums, galleries and the city, delight, amaze, amuse, educate and inspire. The richest display of the biennial is located at M. MADONNA WITH CHILD IN THE ORIENTAL EYES 2011-10-17

Rūta Giniūnaitė

Gao Yuan used the subject of Madonna and child as a discovery and creative inspiration. Influenced by the Renaissance masterpieces, seen in Italy, the artist decided to incorporate the subject into the Eastern cultural space. The concept of two worlds is represented in the artwork – religious (Christian) and astrological (Signs of Zodiac, celestial bodies). Chinese women and children are involved into the composition instead of Jesus and Mary.

MUSIC IN DANCE PERFORMANCES – NECESSITY OR ADVANTAGE? 2011-10-04

Justina Paltanavičiūtė

Dance and music have been connected since the ancient times. Rhythmic body movements (dance) are related to music more than anything else. However, the dance has acquired new meaning in the time of conceptualism and postmodernism. So what is contemporary dance and what is its relation with music? Is music still a satellite of dance? Can dance exist separately? These questions were raised by the International Contemporary Dance Festival Aura that took place on the 21-25 of September and presented a wide range of dance performances.

WAITING FOR A NEW SEASON OF KAUNAS STATE MUSICAL THEATRE 2011-09-30

Justina Paltanavičiūtė

Kaunas State Musical Theatre is preparing for a new season that will start on the 1st of October. The season will be opened with the opera Lucia di Lammermoor by G. Donizetti – an ambitious stage work, presented in the original language. In November the audience will be able to see another novelty – the opera Attila by G. Verdi that will be staged in Lithuania for the first time and also in Italian.

MAKERS OF "THE INVISIBLE FRONT" AIM TO SHOW THE LITHUANIAN AFTERWAR HISTORY TO THE WORLD 2011-09-13

Austėja Masiokaitė

Film “The Invisible Front”, premièred in Kaunas “Romuva” cinema on the 4th of September, was a possibility for Lithuanians to look at themselves from outside because the grievances of Lithuanian history were contemplated by foreigners here. It was a fair challenge to the creative team to speak about the problems of another country. Both directors are related to Lithuania very closely (Swede Jonas Ohman has been living here for almost a decade and Vincas Sruoginis is a Lithuanian American) but the latter admits he thought the film would be booed in Lithuania.

WHO WILL SAVE THE ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE OF KAUNAS? 2011-09-12

Jolita Butkevičienė

A paradoxical but obvious fact must be noted: there are too many objects of defensive architecture in Kaunas because we failed to preserve them. Many citizens believe that Kaunas fortress, representing Russian Tsarist period, is alien to us. That is another flaw in the treatment of Lithuanian cultural heritage: history is sorted to acceptable and unacceptable periods. However, ignorance of history not only impoverishes our memory but also condemns repeating the forgotten mistakes.

FAREWELL TO THE SUMMER ALONG WITH G.PUCCINI’S MUSIC IN PAŽAISLIS 2011-09-05

Justina Paltanavičiūtė

Although the premiere of the opera “La Rondine” closed Pažaislis Music Festival, one could not state that it generalised the entire festival of this year. All concerts were rather different, and this concert also differed a lot from others. Nonetheless, one may rejoice that the concert was very unexpected and interesting to serious music admirers by all aspects.

IMPRESSIONS FROM PRESTEIGNE FESTIVAL: LITHUANIAN MUSIC IN TOWN OF HIPPIES 2011-09-02

Daiva Parulskienė

Actually, Lithuanian music brought some oddity and freshness into the rather conservative English programme of Presteigne Festival, and the impressive Sextet of Vytautas Barkauskas received the greatest applause and the most of "bravos". The opus was performed by Navarra String Quintet along with the Welsh pianist and composer Huw Watkins.

REPORT FROM ŽAGARĖ PLEIN-AIR 2011-08-30

Vaida Tamoševičiūtė

The idea to organise such plein-airs belongs to Židrija – she decided to organise such an event while studying at the Art Institute, when students of different specialties worked in closed auditoriums and did not see colleagues’ works. Therefore, the artist encouraged artists to open up, to take interest in others, to communicate and perhaps even try different fields of art.

T. GUTAUSKAS’ MASKS UNITE BASKETBALL, FOLK AND MODERN ART 2011-08-26

Austėja Masiokaitė

T. Gutauskas brought up the question of value of art. “A deeper question is why art is needed in general? Artists think about the meaning of life ostensibly, they give existential questions while the real life passes by on its won. Why are they creating then? For themselves? Art is for the public. If people do not accept it, it is not needed by anyone, why are they creating it then?” the author questioned.

Austėja Masiokaitė

The photography exhibition of N.Korhonen “Rewind” met visitors by a photograph of a portrait with the cut-out face. This personal and on another hand very impersonal painting became a wonderful introduction to the exhibition, which tells a very personal story sometimes but which speaks about each of us at the same time.

AVANT-GARDE CABARET: VARIATIONS ON THEME OF TRADITION 2011-08-09

Justina Paltanavičiūtė

Comedy, dance, songs, theatre – everything at the same time. A night club at the crossing of the 19th and 20th century, in the twilight of which stylish ladies sparkle and gentlemen sit at tables. Traditional cabaret could be French, Dutch, German or American. Music of cabaret style resounded in one of Pažaislis Music Festival concerts too.

JUBILEE OPERETTA AT KAUNAS CASTLE 2011-07-15

One should remember that the festival Operetta at Kaunas Castle is always free of charge, summerly, taking place in the open air; therefore, it is not too obliging. It is simply a wonderful possibility for classical stage music lovers to admirer music and their favourite performers. Evidently, the offer satisfied the demand, and this fact proves that the festival has deep traditions. Let's expect that it will live long.

MARCELIJUS MARTINAITIS: “WE LIVED” 2011-07-12

Did the youth experiences of our grandfathers differ from experiences of childhood and youth of the present generation? M.Martinaitis tells about the period, which is history to present youth already, in his book of biographical notes “We Lived”. The writer, who shared his recollections in the book, commented them and answered questions that appeared while taking turns in the past described in the book.

200TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF F. LISZT ALONG WITH L. GENIUŠAS 2011-07-11

One of the events dedicated to the 200th anniversary of F. Liszt was organised by Pažaislis Music Festival on the evening of the 30th of June. The pianist L.Geniušas played the piano at Kaunas Philharmonic Hall. The audience heard masterpieces of two romantics interpreted in a traditional and at the same time individual and intimate manner: manly, sensitive and modest Chopin and very philosophical Liszt.

POP FIESTA IN PAŽAISLIS MUSIC FESTIVAL 2011-06-13

According to the musicologist Lawrence Kramer, funeral lament sounds to classical music lately. One could state that it also sounded in Pažaislis Music Festival. However, we should not bury this genre of music: the festival offers other classical or at least academic music concerts throughout the summer, not to mention the fact that some of them have already been presented before. Hopefully, representatives of the classical music world will take a thought about values of classical music and lack of originality and that opuses of Lady Gaga will sound in places suitable for them rather than in monasteries.

YOU LISTEN AND HEAR HOW THE PUPPET HEART BEATS 2011-06-06

In brief: The 19th international puppet theatre festival “The Flying Festival” organised on the 25th-28th of May presented the great variety of themes and actors' mastery: performances of puppeteers from Latvia, Russia, Poland, the Ukraine, France, Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovakia, the Netherlands, Israel, China and Lithuania were shown at Kaunas Puppet, Kaunas State Musical, Kaunas State Drama and Kaunas Chamber Theatres till late night.

STASYS EIDRIGEVIČIUS: “MY REAL ME IS SOMEWHERE THERE… WHERE IS IT?” 2011-05-26

In brief: The National Prize winner, world-famous visual art creator living in Poland from 1980 Stasys Eidrigevičius organised a closed meeting with Kaunas culture and contemporary art creators. Only nine Kaunas representatives of art participated in the meeting. The article is about the work of S.Eidrigevičius and his visit to Lithuania: exhibition in Vilnius and meetings in Kaunas.

“INTERNAL SORES” OR CREATION AS RITUAL 2011-05-19

V. Tamoševičiūtė: "The performance will be accompanied by the prayer of forgiveness to oneself which I wrote using the Prayer of Forgiveness to Oneself created by an American priest R. de Grandi. He uses it for curing of soul and reminds that forgiveness is not a feeling but a wilful decision. After taking one part, I created my own prayer made of many pieces, sins and reproaches known to many people. It is my very personal and impersonal story. The story that many people experience every day."

AMBER TRIO: FROM RATIONALITY TO PASSION 2011-05-11

Amber Trio organised a concert at the National M.K.Čiurlionis Art Museum on the 6th of May. They performed the concert for two violins and orchestra in d minor of J. S. Bach adapted to violin, viola and piano, Piano Trio in Es major of L. Van Beethoven, a cycle of plays of T. Makachin “Armenian Pages” and “Spring” of A. Piazzolla from the cycle “Seasons” during the concert. The afternoon of Amber Trio music was dynamic and interesting, full of diverse colours.

NEW VIOLETTA IN “LA TRAVIATA” OF G. VERDI 2011-04-21

The appearance of R. Vaicekauskaitė in the role of Violetta in the performance “La Traviata” was so striking that it dwarfed all old-timers. She attracted attention by sensitive and perfect singing, sincere and persuasive acting and the really felt drama of Violetta on the stage. The new Violetta was fragile and modestly dramatic, and she rendered the vocal and acting moments right from her heart.

NEW WINDS IN KAUNAS MUSICAL THEATRE 2011-04-11

The creators of the musical "Aida" rejoiced for the staging and shared compliments to each other. How did this musical reach Lithuania? How did the theatre troupe succeed to work with the musical material and why was it replenished by invited guests? The conversation about this with the creators of "Aida": director Vytenis Pauliukaitis, conductor Jonas Janulevičius and one of the main role performers Jeronimas Milius is presented.

IN MUSIC – AS IN LIFE… 2011-03-25

A.Malcys: "As for the genre of the symphony, the creation of a large opus is a challenge to me. This genre offers the possibility to implement things that cannot be realised in real life. Each work is a document that reflects the author’s craft, his attitude to the world, aesthetics, moments of success and doubt, the flow of creative thoughts."

EXOTICS AND TRADITIONAL JAZZ: GAIO DE LIMA QUINTET 2011-03-24

Exotic rhythms and melodies wrapped in the cover of jazz sounded delicately and tenderly rather than ardently; the music was played in professional and secure manner. The velvety voice of Gaio de Lima created the atmosphere of a lazy afternoon siesta, and Vitor Celestino played the seven-string guitar in a very subtle manner. Lithuanian musicians created an equally strong balance to the exotic performers.

MUSIC OF NORTHERN COUNTRIES AT KAUNAS STATE PHILHARMONIC HALL: CLASSICS AND SOMETHING ELSE 2011-03-22

In brief: “Edvard Grieg and Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis are two stars that shined on the periphery of Europe,” the head of Kaunas State Choir and principal conductor Petras Bingelis pointed out this link between the two composers. In fact, the composers are united not by the works but by the importance to their nations. The Music Festival of E.Grieg and M.K.Čiurlionis is organised in Kaunas for the 14th time already. It took place on the 9th-13th of March and became an introduction to events that will mark the centenary of death of M.K.Čiurlionis.

SUBTLE CLASSIC – GRAPHIC ARTIST ELENA JAKUTYTĖ 2011-03-11

The works of Elena Jakutytė are understood as the symbol of Lithuanian national identity. Her creation inspired by folk art is close to it by the forms and content. Cycles of prints on themes of folk songs and St. George uphold the national identity which was very important during the period of the Soviet empire. At the same time her works do not lose artistic value and enrich the national tradition by new discovered symbols.

CHAMBER BIRTHDAY FESTIVAL 2011-03-04

In brief: St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra founded in Vilnius as the Municipality Ensemble in 1995 celebrated its 17thanniversary in Vilnius St. Catherine Church on the 15th of February and in Kaunas, at the State Philharmonic Hall on the 25th of February. The birthday celebrated at Kaunas State Philharmonic Hall was not crazy at all and quite temperate.

FLUTE + HARP = FA, OR DIAMONDS HIDDEN IN SNOW 2011-02-25

In brief: Flute and harp is an untraditional combination in the context of classical music. One could hear the sound of this duet in the White Hall of Kaunas State Musical Theatre on the 20th of February. The flutist Fausta Drulytė and harpist Viktorija Smailytė, who called themselves FA, performed music of their beloved instruments to listeners.

PROBLEMS OF RAILWAY HERITAGE PRESERVATION IN KAUNAS AND ABROAD 2011-02-21

In brief: Museums of railway and technical heritage are very popular in West Europe as they attract visitors by old-time equipment and technology as well as the possibility to smell real steam and smoke and to try out the equipment used by our grandparents. Could Kaunas become a centre for admires of technique and receive income from this field?

SPANISH SOUNDS AT KAUNAS STATE PHILHARMONIC HALL 2011-02-14

In brief: “The classical guitar is an instrument of high technical and artistic possibilities; it may be equalled to a rather big orchestra,” believes V. Mikuckis. The soloist gladdened listeners by sounds of his beloved instrument at Kaunas State Philharmonic Hall on the 9th of February.

MARGUERITE, FAUST OR MEPHISTOPHELES? 2011-01-28

There was not so much of love in this staging of “Marguerite”: it was not close to the orchestra, and Marguerite enjoyed being dramatic. Although Faust was sincerely in love, he became a secondary character of the opera. The main idea of the work is the victory of the good and love against evil; still, isn't this the case when the intellectual devil overshadowed everything in the performance and became the main character? Asking again: Marguerite, Faust or Mephistopheles, the author answers - Mephistopheles!

SYMBOLS OF AEON IN MEMORIAM OF DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM 2011-01-17

The very end of the oratorio appeared unexpected: views of nature shown in video installations were replaced by text, and the soloists and the composer encouraged everybody to stand up and sing along. This sounded as a chant in unison. Perhaps somebody was moved by the feeling of unity, while others could have sarcastic or ironic thoughts as though they sang a hymn of some distant country.

WHAT KILLED STAINED-GLASS? 2011-01-14

The painter, stained-glass and installation creator Eimutis Markūnas, whose stained-glass works decorate spaces of Lithuanian and foreign buildings, believes that the golden age of stained-glass has gone for good. In his opinion, this kind of art will surely change fundamentally, and there is no place for traditional stained-glass in post-modern architecture at all.

Realising the scale and diversity of the cultural offer in Milan, one becomes curious how and by what the guest from North, the subtle M.K.Čiurlionis finds his place in this Babel of cultures. What was the thread that joined the mature Italian gallery visitor and Lithuanian artist, who created music and paintings more than one hundred years ago in the eastern corner of Europe?

PUZZLE OF OPERAS AND JOKES: “OPERA IMPOSSIBILE” 2010-12-27

Justina Paltanavičiūtė

In brief: One could enjoy a real puzzle of operas, symphony and popular music compositions at Kaunas State Philharmonic Hall on the 20th of December. The symphony drama "Opera Impossibile" was presented by Gintaras Rinkevičius and the Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra. Famous opera characters were embodied by soloists Lauryna Bendžiūnaitė (soprano), Ieva Prudnikovaitė (mezzo soprano), Rafailas Karpis (tenor) and Vladimiras Prudnikovas (bass) that evening.

R.SCHUMANN: CONFRONTATION OF FEMININITY AND MASCULINITY 2010-12-20

Justina Paltanavičiūtė

Pathos and logos, yin and yang, femininity and masculinity, anima and animus. Many similar contrasting images exist in various cultures. By the way, they are not only opposed but constantly compared with each other. The vocal cycles of Robert Schumann “Woman's Love and Life” and “Poet's Love” may be attributed to them in a certain way. These cycles were performed at Kaunas Artists' House.

CHANGE OF TIME, DISTANCES AND US 2010-12-16

Milda Kiaušaitė

By his photographs V.Luckus laughs at the theatre of daily life. A wincing young photographer, perplexed glances of elderly women, static old people feeling unsettled inside… The photographer has erased everything that hides the most important features. Meanwhile, the viewer is granted the possibility to see himself/herself in the clean white background.

G. VARNAS: “AN ACTOR SHOULD BE AN ARTIST RATHER THAN A STATE SERVANT” 2010-12-13

Vidmantas Kiaušas

We live in an interesting period of time: theatre experiences shrinkage, it is contracting; therefore, it should become deeper and turn into elite art. Otherwise, theatre will turn into a soap opera, series. The logic of real theatre is not the “stars” but things the audience expects from you. You have to see the problem and to be able to show it, to make the audience hear you and persuade to follow you. Losses are inevitable; some performances cannot be shown in halls of a thousand seats. Such a tendency has been noticed in Europe a long time ago; sometimes a performance is shown in a room for a small number of spectators.

HURDLE SPRINT OF K.NAVAKAS 2010-12-09

Simona Siderevičiūtė

“Creation is a game, and a man would not survive without playing,” states K.Navakas. Still, it is a game in a serious form as subconscious images are realised in creation. The writer did not disguise during the meeting that writing was not only pleasure: sometimes it was hard work which required much effort. Nonetheless, the guest of the evening will not refuse his craft: he is preparing psychologically for writing a novel.

J.KAZLAUSKAS: TRACING THE GONE 2010-12-09

Milda Kiaušaitė

The photographs of J.Kazlauskas are ambivalent. One the one hand, photographs created by the traveller are interesting by their authenticity: many captured views have vanished for good. On another hand, the works of J.Kazlauskas differed from the traditional searches of Lithuanian school of photography. According to the art critic Agnė Narušytė, his works “do not stand out stylistically”; however, it would be hard not to notice the technical and creative individuality of the author.

ARTIST KĘSTUTIS KASPARAVIČIUS: I NEVER WROTE SPECIFICALLY FOR CHILDREN 2010-12-08

Rūta Marcinkevičiūtė

I write what is in my head simply. I have never wrote specifically for children I believe that one is born a children's writer. Or not. Let's say I would start writing for grown-ups. I am not going to do it but I am sure that those books would not differ from books written until now. Not at all.

M.ALEXANDER’S JAZZ INTRIGUED LIKE A DETECTIVE STORY 2010-12-06

Asta Andrė

“I listened to the music as to a detective story eager to find out what will happen next,” the jazz keyboardist Olegas Molokojedovas shared his impressions of the evening. “M.Alexander is a genius, and his technique is perfect. It is long time since I heard such masterful performance and swing; and I have not heard such fresh mix of traditional jazz, pop music and reggae at all.”

G.PADEGIMAS: “THE BIGGEST CRIME IN ART IS TO TAKE AWAY HOPE” 2010-11-22

Theatre should resist the squall of mass culture, it should not surrender. The main function of theatre has always been the same: creation of spiritual infrastructure. Theatre can do much more than the society thinks it can. Amusement may be provided by various shows, circuses, popular street events. Meanwhile, theatre is a powerful instrument of self-analysis, the place where one should feel and think, switch on the machine of associations, reflect the past and the future.

NOTHING OF WARHOL OR STYLISATION (STERILISATION) OF CHAOS 2010-11-16

A. Warhol: “I wanted to draw nothing. I searched for something that would contain the essence of nothing, that’s it.” The works of A.Warhol presented in Kaunas are barely known; still, they correspond to the aim of the artist: to celebrate the popular culture, no matter whether we are speaking about the queen, member of the parliament, singer, actress or a star taken to the sky due to some scandal.

MILAN PREPARING FOR A MEETING WITH M.K.ČIURLIONIS 2010-11-14

The biggest exhibition of M.K.Čiurlionis ever showcased in West European countries “Čiurlionis – Esoteric Trip 1875-1911” will be opened in Milan (Italy) on the 15th-16th of November. The cultural attaché of Lithuania in Italy I.Gaižutytė tells about the eve of the opening of the exhibition.

KAUET: THE OFFERED CONCEPT OF COMMEMORATION OF THE POPE IN KAUNAS IS UNSUITABLE 2010-11-12

Kaunas Architecture and City Planning Experts’ Council (KAUET) did not approve of the project of the monument to the Pope John Paul II of the Polish sculptor Cz.Dzwigaj in Kaunas Confluence Park due to the unsuitable concept of the commemoration and recommended to improve the project.

BIRTHDAY OF J.MAČIŪNAS – FOR RELAXED PEOPLE 2010-11-10

The organiser of the event and soul of the birthday E.Velaniškytė noticed that J.Mačiūnas was devalued in his homeland wantonly; therefore, the objective of this birthday was to waken up the spirit of Mačiūnas in Kaunas and to encourage non-commercial art.

“WORKS OF FRIENDSHIP” OF Ž.MIKŠYS AND R.G.MORDMÜLLER IN ŠIAULIAI 2010-11-08

The exhibition born from the creative cooperation of Ž.Mikšys and R.G. Mordmüller is a valuable example worth seeing at Laiptai Gallery in Šiauliai. Žibuntas and Rainer demonstrate their concentration protecting the real values of European culture. This is the meaning and content of their joint works.

J.VAITKUS: “THE TASK OF THE THEATRE IS NOT TO SATISFY SENSES OF INDIVIDUALS BUT TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO THINK” 2010-11-02

Theatre serves as a vaccine: after seeing a real, live performance a person comes through a short illness, he/she pictures himself/herself in the place of the hero, thinks what he/she would do, whether he/she would have courage to behave in one or another way. I do not understand now looking around: the theatre seems to have lost its place, it looks confused and not knowing how to get to the organism of the state. Theatre is always the opposition to any authorities. Authorities do everything for the theatre to be toothless, unproblematic, they try to make it entertaining rather than speaking to a man.

WALKING IN GARDENS OF E. MARKŪNAS 2010-10-28

“Gardens of Emptiness” of E.Markūnas baffle the viewer. A question appears: what is the position of the artist who has created all this? The works of E.Markūnas try to shock; still, does this shock help us to look at the showed problems otherwise? The artist succeeded to make the viewer stop and dip into thought. However, the theme of consumerism and emptiness is escalated so loudly and frequently nowadays…

VILNIUS JAZZ: SHOTS AT GOAL AND OFF THE TARGET 2010-10-26

In brief: The 23rd contemporary jazz festival Vilnius Jazz will be remembered as the biggest in its entire history and one of the most interesting and colourful, even though not all projects corresponded to the declared direction of the festival; i.e., to show the newest phenomena of jazz and things that take avant-garde art ahead.

J.JURAŠAS: “THEATRE CAN SHOCK BY SUBTLE THOUGHT INSTEAD OF FORM” 2010-10-11

It is obvious that the theatre of effect and provoking shock is enjoyed in Lithuania. My interest in such theatre is decreasing with time. I always believed that it would be good to place an explosive under the chair of each spectator, the explosion of which would make a man think and open up. Such theatre is interesting. It may shock by the subtle thought without any shocking form.

CONGRATULATIONS TO KAMANE.LT – WITH HONEY, MUSIC AND OFFENDING OF THE AUDIENCE 2010-10-05

The portal of professional art news updated daily in Lithuanian and English Kamane.lt, which was born at Kaunas Artists’ House, turned 5 years of age on the morning of the 5th of October. On this occasion a pleasantly heedful conference “Kamane.lt-5. What should we do about it?” was convened at Kaunas Artists’ House.

RESERVED SLAUGHTER 2010-10-04

Looking at photographs of R. Vikšraitis, the viewer feels like participating in a pig slaughter described by Sigitas Parulskis in the essay “Killing”. The return to the village, to one’s roots and the dirt present there, which may not be washed by any detergents from hands and heart, leave a trace in the sub-conscience. Looking at photographs of R.Vikšraitis we realise that we do not want to see what is shown to us. Lithuanians close their eyes. Meanwhile, M.Parr titled the chronicler of our century opens his eyes widely.

MISSION OF ŽIRKLIONIS – TO UNITE YOUNG MEN OF LETTERS 2010-09-27

“Reflection on contemporary literature lacks dialogue. Only closed anonymous communities exist which do not want to get acquainted with each other. Events dedicated to dialogue help a creating man to look at himself/herself through eyes of other people and to feel that he/she is not the centre of the world, to feel the diversity of literature, which requires discussion,” said Mindaugas Grigaitis, one of the organisers of the event and an active member of Žirklionis.

A. MIKUTA: “I DON‘T WANT TO DANCE ROCK‘N‘ROLL ANY MORE” 2010-09-27

How can we speak about wilful artistic or political line in Lithuania if deserters are everywhere. When havoc is noticed in the society, havoc prevails in culture too. I would like one culture weekly to be more national, like the no-longer-existing Dienovidis, another – universal, the third – revolutionary, bold, not trying to please the supporters. Meanwhile, we have weeklies which are mixed and confused. Too little of power and ambition is present. We should not be so scattered in such a small land.

UNITED BY CREATIVE IDEALS: SOFIJA AND MIKALOJUS KONSTANTINAS ČIURLIONIAI 2010-09-20

The idea of “similar spirits” may be traced in the correspondence of Sofija and Mikalojus Konstantinas frequently. Rhetoric with elevation is refused both in her articles and in letters written to her by Konstantinas; silence is considered an important means of their communication. M.K.Čiurlionis has written to Sofija: “...what can we say to each other with the help of black ink? [...] wouldn’t we say to each other much more by silence?”.

HOW LITHUANIAN AND FRENCH CULTURES ASSOCIATED IN THE 19TH CENTURY 2010-09-16

Lithuania was proclaimed by lectures of A.Mickiewicz, research of F.de Saussure, memories of Napoleon’s army about the exotic land in France in the 19th century. P.Merimée, who was interested in the Samogitian dialect and paganism, was also presented in the conference “Cultural Links of Lithuania and France in the 19th Century”. The author of the short story “Bear” wrote about Lithuania, the country using the ancient language. He embellished his work by Lithuanian words, described rituals and nature, which was also pictured in the national epic of A.Mickiewicz “Pan Tadeusz”.

STUDENTS OF V.MASALSKIS BROUGHT A “MESSAGE” TO KAUNAS 2010-09-02

Laisvės Alley echoed with whoops which reminded of an important message, offering, protest and confession at noon of the 1st of September. It was like a strong lightning stroke from the clear sky: passers-by hushed down after getting a split-second slash of energy, sincerity, aesthetical cleanliness; later they continued their road in the chaotic crowd of the street but they had been marked by a strong emotional shock.

ABOUT IMPORT OF FELIKSAS FROM KĖDAINIAI TO KAUNAS 2010-08-06

What would happen if we invited Feliksas from Kėdainiai to tidy up the falling-apart buildings of Kaunas old town artistically? Perhaps Kaunas inhabitants would start embellishing their city out of anger? Kaunas inhabitants are proud of their historical city. Then why are we losing for “the capital of cucumbers”?

“CONTEMPORARY LITHUANIAN DRAWING” – VISIT CARD OF LITHUANIANS IN WARSAW 2010-08-05

The exhibition “Contemporary Lithuanian Drawing” is the first visit card presenting the main tendencies of attitude of Kaunas artists to contemporary drawing. Continuing the rich and versatile tradition of European drawing, Kaunas artists find persuasive and original style for expressing and reflecting their epoch. This attitude unites the participants of the exhibition.

HERITAGE OF BROAD GAUGE RAILWAY IN KAUNAS: CAN IT BE REVITALISED? 2010-08-05

In brief: There are many unused industrial objects and territories in Kaunas. One of them is the depot of locomotives near the Nemunas. Only two facilities of this kind have remained in Lithuania: in Vilnius and Kaunas. Even though the railwaymen take care of the territory of the depot, its “expiry date” is already near. Therefore, the author offers several ideas which could help to get acquainted with the railway heritage better, reveal its charm and save the place from final deterioration.

ORNAMENTS AND FIGURES: M.K.ČIURLIONIS AND ART NOUVEAU 2010-08-02

In brief: It is believed that the originality of art created by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875-1911) is determined by the intertwined features of Symbolism and Avant-gardism. As scientists analyse the “transitional" status of Čiurlionis’ works (between Symbolism and Modernism), less attention is allocated to features determined by art of his epoch, i.e., manifestations of epoch of year 1900 and Art Nouveau.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS OF ARTISTS – AS ABSURD LOTTERY 2010-07-26

The results of entrance examinations to higher art schools announced last Friday caused more concern than joy, similar to last year. The Ministry of Education and Science boasted in spring that it would improve the procedure of artists’ acceptance to higher art schools this year. It promised to correct the formula of evaluation of special skills and methodology of calculation of results. It planned to train evaluation committee members how the evaluation system should be applied and exams should be organised more fluently. Have the promises been fulfilled?

FUTURE OF ALEKSOTAS AIRPORT – BETWEEN YOUTHFUL UTOPIAS AND REALITY 2010-07-16

Strive for things which seem impossible today and you will achieve what will appear real tomorrow: this is how the creative courage of participants of the young architects plein-air, which was organised in the old Aleksotas airport in Kaunas at the end of June, could be described. According to the architect R.Palys, “the biggest achievement is that young architects realised the importance of the airport, its semantic and historical significance well“.

PRESENTATION OF LITHUANIAN SUMMER FESTIVALS: BETWEEN ART AND ENTERTAINMENT 2010-07-13

The summer season is suitable for organising various festivals; untraditional spaces, i.e., various manors, parks, museum courtyards or terraces are suitable for this purpose. The programme is often adjusted to open-air stages: classical music is combined with jazz; also, stage opuses, concert performances and projects prepared for festivals in particular are offered. Cosy atmosphere, beautiful environment and emotional music is frequently more important to listeners, who are not very big music gourmands.

“OPERETTA IN KAUNAS CASTLE”: FRENCH MUSIC FOR THE MASSES 2010-07-09

If the festival "Operetta in Kaunas Castle" were to be evaluated as a phenomenon, it is evident that it is a good occasion to popularise classical music for the wide public. On another hand, the festival is not a purely popular music event. It is rather a borderline festival: the manoeuvring between popular and serious culture is fashionable today; still, the masses rather than music gourmands are pleased in this way.

COMBINATION OF DIFFERENT CULTURES: “ORCHESTRAL FLAMENCO” 2010-06-30

It is difficult to judge the concert of Pažaislis Music Festival “A.M.Germek: Orchestral Flamenco” as a solid formation. It was full of various moods, which provoked diverse emotions and evaluations. Maybe that was an attempt to persuade listeners of various types – both those who did not wish to contemplate complicated emotions and those who did not appreciate superficial and illustrative art.

LITHUANIAN ART IN 1940-1941: RED BAND ON CREATORS’ EYES 2010-06-30

"Under the Red Star": artists believed naively at the period of changes of 1940 that the annexation of Lithuania to the empire controlled by Stalin's dictatorship would improve lives of people.” Intellectuals hoped to preserve at least the cultural sovereignty and believed that political changes would not have any impact on artists. They wanted recognition and material remuneration hoping that the generous Soviet authorities would evaluate their attempts. However, wasn’t the naivety of the intelligentsia too dangerous?

THE WORLD IN LIGHT OF BLACK SUN OF KAMPAS 2010-06-29

“Kampas was one of the artists who forgot his personal life and dedicated all the spiritual passion to creation. He burned in his dreams destroying himself completely. It seems to me that he was a completely phenomenal case in Lithuania. Moderation, coldness and reason is typical of Lithuanians. Meanwhile, Kampas gave away all his health and spirit to creation. His paintings are full of heart rather than intellectualism or conceptualism. It is a quality of increasing value these days as less and less of it remains.” (E.Miliūnas).

AFTER A WALK ON THE OTHER SIDE OF ICE ACCORDING TO V.STANKUS 2010-06-23

It is still early to guess whether the poet V.Stankus, who received Z.Gėlė Prize for the debut selection of poems “A Walk on the Other Side of Ice”, will be inspired for new poetical searches by such evaluation or will fall asleep on laurels. Still, it is intriguing and tempting to have a walk on the other side of ice and to get acquainted with the most outstanding poetical debut of the year.

LATVIA – THE FLIGHT OF M.PITRĖNAS TO THE WORLD 2010-06-22

M.Pitrėnas will create the triptych of G.Puccini in Düsseldorf Opera in Germany next year. He has already signed a contract with the Austrian art agency Hollaender-Cali. One more project offered by this agency is “The Magic Flute” by W.A.Mozart in KölnOpera Theatre. This performance awaits M.Pitrėnas in the first half of the next season. In addition to new works in Riga, the Lithuanian will also create “Carmen” in Warsaw Grand Theatre.
