Aušra Kaziliūnaitė: I never wanted to live in poverty 2013-07-30

Interlocutor Jurga Tumasonytė

A conversation about creation with the poet, author of two books and active participant of literature field Aušra Kaziliūnaitė is presented. The poet speaks about her liking to keep a kind of diary, to put down memories and preserve them in this way. Poetry for her is an opposite from the diary – poems never profess the flat truth of fact.

The White Villa. From the archive of Jurgis Graudinas

Nine decades of the White Villa: from the symbol of the city to ruins 2013-07-12

Austėja Masiokaitė

The idea of the White Villa, which was a centre of culture in the inter-war period, was turned to a multi-flat apartment house for a short period in Soviet years and was reborn as Kaukas restaurant later. The question whether it will crumble away along with the bricks of the building should get the answer soon – at least for the reason that the forlorn walls of the building will not be able to wait much longer.

Three exhibitions open at Kaunas Picture Gallery at the moment: “5th Solo Show” of Arvydas Brazdžiūnas-Dusė (until July 14), “I am Doctor Love” of Elena Balsiukaitė-Brazdžiūnienė (until July 14) and “Names of the Break generation: Yellow of Eglė Velaniškytė” (until September 1) could be described by three phrases – one school, three different faces, three unique roads.

Curatorship of art: between an artwork, artist and viewer 2013-06-29

Interlocutor Rūta Šetikaitė

Texts about exhibitions that attract art professionals and amateurs may usually be found in every more serious culture publication. However, the “kitchen” of organisation of exhibitions often remains untouched as a theme. Therefore, the interlocutor speaks with the curator of the National Gallery of Art Dovilė Tumpytė and representative of the Contemporary Art Centre Valentinas Klimašauskas about curatorship of art and the essence of work of an art curator.

R.Juškelis. "Reservists"

Creative archives today: “Reservists” of Romas Juškelis 2013-06-26

Tomas Pabedinskas

The organisers call the exhibition of Kaunas photographer Romas Juškelis “Reservists” showcased at Kaunas Photography Gallery a premiere. Works of this cycle could not be displayed until 1990 due to the political situation; the entire series was never presented after the restoration of Lithuania’s independence too. It may also be stated that the exhibition of R. Juškelis “Reservists” continues the series of “discoveries” of archives of photography and their presentation on the stage of contemporary photography.

The leader of the last, 93rd season of our theatres is Kaunas drama, for sure. This statement may be questioned subjectively but objective facts show that this is where events important for the entire system of our state theatres took place this season. The new performance “A Month in a Village”, by which the National Kaunas Drama Theatre announced the end of this historical season, is a suitable pretext for generalisations and thoughts about the latter creative cycle.

Thriller without crown 2013-06-21

Urtė Navalinskaitė

The author of the article states that she expected a lot from the book of Gina Viliūnė “A Crown Without a King” (Karūna be karaliaus). It was presented as a historical thriller that reminds of foreign best-sellers and that untangles a Lithuanian story. Still, the book of G.Viliūnė “A Crown Without a King” does not shine so brightly.

The wave of the International Performance Festival washed Kaunas recently. The festival Creature prepared a rich table of treats for art admirers. Everybody could hear about such festivals and platforms organised in other countries as Month of Performance Art in Berlin, Pals and Live Action in Sweden, to get acquainted and communicate with the organisers and participants of these festivals, to give questions and watch their live performances or video documentations of performances.

About history in literature 2013-06-17

Mindaugas Grigaitis, Simona Siderevičiūtė, Urtė Sakalytė, Loreta Varaniūtė and Urtė Navalinskaitė

The participants of the discussion analyse the directions and tendencies of contemporary “historical prose”. Is the turn of literature to history necessary for the internally lazy society so that it does not forget lessons of history or is it only fashion the aim of which is to buy the reader by manipulating with painful themes?

The most famous cycles of F. Kerpauskas are “Stones in Bloom” and “Wounds of Trees”.

The 20th traditional international festival of puppet theatres Smiling Puppets and Children 2013 was organised in Kaunas on May 16-19. Most probably Kaunas inhabitants have already become used to this festival and especially the impressive annual parade of puppets in Laisvės Alley. Therefore, the author wants to share his considerations what makes this unique cultural phenomenon live and what is needed for it to be alive in future.

Mysterious “KGB Children” 2013-05-17

Urtė Navalinskaitė

The detective novel (or perhaps thriller) “KGB Children” was published at the beginning of this year. J. Žilinskas intended to tell to younger readers what Lithuania was like seventeen years ago and made a good work in the book. The entire novel is full of the dark spirit of early years of Lithuania’s Independence.

Inter-war panorama of Kaunas

Literary Myth of Kaunas (Several Examples) 2013-05-10

Many cities of the world have some particular myths about their establishment: everybody knows the myths of Rome, Moscow, Constantinople, Krakow, Vilnius, Jerusalem and other cities. Still, there are cities that do not have their real legends of origin and are somehow “less sacred” due to this reason. Kaunas stands out in the graphic map of cities of the world by the very regular network of streets. The signs of Kaunas authority seem to be created artificially (when the city became the temporary capital of Lithuania in 1919) rather than placed down from the Sky.

Milda Kiaušaitė

The album “Eastern Prussia” of the art photographer Raimundas Urbonas (1963 – 1999) published by Kitas Takas (2012) after his death is marked with a clear sign of history – the photographer worked in a strictly defined territory that was closely related with the past of Lithuania, the process of inevitable decay and change may be felt in works. Despite these features, the author does not want to call the cycle of Eastern Prussia a simple quotation of reality.

8TH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF MEDIA ART AND MUSIC “CENTRE”: WHAT’S IN THE CENTRE? 2013-04-29

The international media art and music festival “Centre” invited to visit several spaces in the centre of Kaunas on April 8-14. The festival is organised since 2002, and the need for the format of the festival appeared when the synthesis of different art disciplines, science and medias became an actual and separate form of cultural communication.

Simona Čižikaitė, Rasa Biveinytė, Simona Balvočiūtė

The tradition of wooden architecture is rather pronounced in many Lithuanian towns, to which suburbs full of wooden houses were attached. Now these suburbs have turned into unique quarters. Such examples may be found in Vilnius (Žvėrynas, Markučiai, Šnipiškės, Antakalnis), Kaunas (Vilijampolė, Panemunė, Žemieji Šančiai, Žaliakalnis); Druskininkai, Klaipėda and other resort towns stand out by original masterpieces of wooden architecture.

ABOUT THEATRE AND CRITIQUE: CRITICALLY (II) 2013-04-26

Viktorija Ivanova

“The task of a critic is to analyse, no matter how drearily it may sound. Still, the analysis should not be narrow – all knowledge should be used for it as art is also born from analysis. Similarly to the creator who stages a performance and thinks what he wants to say, for what, how and why, the same questions should be answered by a critic in his/her critique."

Interlocutor Jurga Tumasonytė

It is hard to call the poetess Vaiva Kuodytė a debutant who has published her first book – the name of Vaiva is frequently mentioned in the cultural field for several years. Of course, it is necessary to make the effort, give the most usual questions of a family doctor that can reveal a non-standard literary contamination.

PLEASURES OF LISTENING IN THE FESTIVAL JAUNA MUZIKA OF THIS YEAR 2013-04-17

Tautvydas Bajarkevičius

The annual festival Jauna Muzika dedicated to contemporary music took place in Vilnius on April 2–7. From the very beginning of its existence, when the festival had a subheading “e-music”, its biggest part was dedicated to electronic music. This tendency remains until now with some exceptions. The subheading was changed to the more abstract “sound gallery” several years ago. Jauna Muzika also presents a wide spectrum of contemporary academic music – it is very natural for an event organised by the Composers’ Union.

I HAVE READ SOME POPULAR LITERATURE. I HAVE SINNED 2013-04-04

Urtė Navalinskaitė

Decent people do not boast that they have read some popular literature. If they reveal it, they can defend themselves that they took the book from the library or from some dubious friends. Still, why do crowds of people read simple love novels or detective stories much more often than some deep and spiritual considerations about the place of a human-being in this world?

As March comes to an end, one may notice in schedules of the city exhibitions that the majority of organisers prolonged the duration of expositions. In Lithuania the film was accepted favourably – many questions were given during the meeting with the actress. Still, when the themes are so subtle and sensitive, more questions appear. Therefore, the author of the article met the actress Tiesel in Vilnius old town one sunny morning to speak about the film, themes analysed in it and special experiences gained during the filming.

We have the same conditions to create and work like other members of our society. I never felt and feel like in a margin of the society. The situation of culture is not bad also. The funding of culture is poor but not the culture itself,” D.Čepauskaitė believes.

AMID SIMULACRA AND THE RIGHT TO BE 2013-03-19

Silvija Čižaitė-Rudokienė

Still, one could argue whether “1863” is really a masterpiece that illuminated the sky of Lithuania. The first part of the performance was educational – views about the unity of Lithuanian and Polish nation, rebellion of 1863 and its after-effects in the video film. Dance was only integrated by the movement that was present in the film. In the dance block of the performance dancers moved according to the principle of tableau vivant (“live pictures”). One action was ended and only then a new was begun. Perhaps this kind of “frames” in the performance was the main link of it with the video film.

Once the Czech filmmaker Milos Forman created an interesting definition: if we added Walt Disney to Luis Buñuel, we would receive Jan Švankmajer. When Švankmajer speaks about his artistic authorities, he does not mention Disney, of course. He was rather inspired by Federic Fellini, Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud or, which is equally important, by the whole crowd of surrealists, first of all by the French poet André Breton and German artist Max Ernst.

FURTHER – DARKNESS? 2013-01-25

The idea of nationality is related with a rebellion in the drama. As for the performance “Cathedral”, the theme of an artist’s rebellion, no matter that it was unsuccessful, seems to be more perspective than that of the nation. The first rebels mentioned in the performance are artists. Their revolt against the suppression of Lithuania sounds like a rebellion against their patrons, fight for freedom of creation, despite the fact that they do not like to acknowledge their captivity.

We live at the so-called modern age, when the aim to have equals to the aim to be. What should a man, who feels imprisoned by the rhythm “up-down”, do in such a world, when achievements of today, no matter how big they are, are forgotten tomorrow, at the time of short memory. Is it worth speaking about a human being who is determined to think about his existence and search for meaning at the age of hypertext and deconstruction?

Arūnas Vaitkūnas (1956-2005) was a painter of unique hearing for colours and special artistic sensitivity. He is well known to art admirers from canvases full of internal tension and rich strokes. Still, there exist not so well-known works – drawings that have not been displayed in exhibitions.

BOOK ABOUT IMPACT OF MASIULIS 2012-11-19

Vidmantas Kiaušas

After reading the abundantly illustrated book “Algimantas Masiulis: Soul under Armour of Teutonic Knight”, one gets persuaded that the actor searched for essence all his life and tried to avoid the fine running on surface. His analytical mind succeeded to find peace with spiritually free creative work without any regulated restrictions.

“HAMLET” OF OKT RETURNED FROM GIRONA 2012-11-07

The performance sounded really well. The dialogues were so lively, the audience reacted to every nuance, understood the idea of the director and approved of each attempt of actors sensitively. It was the seeing and hearing audience. It was clear that the performance was created not only by the director and actors but also by the audience.

“Let’s Save Love” is the last performance directed by A. Jankevičius from the trilogy staged according to works of the Canadian writer Daniel Denis (“Song of Dir Diro” (“The Last Song of Durans”), 2009 and “Stone Ashes”, 2010). The loyalty to one author and the recognisable director’s style makes A. Jankevičius one of the most interesting young directors creating at Kaunas Drama Theatre.

B.SARAPIENĖ: “IT IS IMPORTANT TO EXPERIMENT BUT IT IS NECESSARY TO PRESERVE TRADITIONS” 2012-10-26

Dovilė Stirbytė

Speaking about tradition and experiments, the artist B.Sarapienė tells that traditions are very dear to her and that she would not like them to disappear. “I believe experiments will end soon and we will return to classical things again. I love weaving tapestry, but there are no orders now. When the system changed, nobody wanted tapestries any more, everybody demanded something new and fresh…”

BAYS IN SEA OF COLOURS 2012-10-25

Ugnė Kraulaidytė

One of the most colourful art events in autumn Kaunas is the selective-competitive exhibition “Connections” of the fourth international watercolour biennial Baltic Bridges. Artists of various art fields have been invited to experiment and look for connections of watercolour with other techniques. Exhibitions (competitive, satellite group and solo exhibitions) were accompanied by master classes and the international conference that researched tendencies and actualities of contemporary watercolour.

NEW ART AND OLD CONTEXT 2012-10-22

Edmundas Saladžius

The history of a human-being is also art history. Art is a big and formidable power that has always been used by forces trying to make impact to the control of the world. It was always attempted to bind the most talented artists by privileges and to ensure their loyalty to their patrons in this way; then the art process could become controllable.

Milda Kiaušaitė

If only you could meet the people I have. See the things I have witnessed. I’ve walked some of the toughest streets around the world and have left screaming at the injustice. It motivates me to do more. My simple hope is that every time I take out my camera I am lucky enough to shoot a frame that ultimately has the power to influence. To change perceptions. To make the viewer care enough to want to know and do more.

IMPRESSIONISTIC GRAPHIC ART OF PIERRE-AUGUSTE RENOIR IN LITHUANIA 2012-09-26

Iveta Dabašinskienė

In brief: Everybody is acquainted with paintings of the French impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir; still, graphic art of the painter is not so well known; these works are presented to people more seldom, and the majority have not heard about graphic works of Renoir at all most probably, even though several prints of this impressionist are stored at the National M.K.Čiurlionis Art Museum, Collection of Foreign Graphic Art.

PHOTOGRAPHY USURPED EXHIBITION SPACES OF KAUNAS 2012-09-24

Ugnė Kraulaidytė

At the beginning of autumn the ninth photography festival Kaunas Photo livened up the pulse of Kaunas cultural life. More than a dozen solo exhibitions of Lithuanian and foreign artists are presented in separate spaces, and about fifty authors introduce their ideas in the joint exhibition at M. Žilinskas Art Gallery. It seems that other kinds of visual art have to pay respect to photography and take a rest meanwhile.

FILM 'THE INVISIBLE FRONT' ABOUT LITHUANIAN PARTISAN RESISTANCE PRESENTED IN NEW YORK 2012-09-14

Austėja Masiokaitė

M. Johnston asserts that ‘The Invisible Front’ should help the world better understand why Lithuanians resisted the cruelty and deportations. V. Sruoginis wishes to activate the dialogue between the East and the West. J. Ohman underlines the aim to make the past of Lithuania and that invisible underground war finally visible.

LITTLE ODYSSEY. VILKIJA 2012-08-24

Ugnė Kraulaidytė

Today Vilkija meets visitors with contrasts: a wonderful curve of river and untended riverside; towers of churches and shabby buildings; light brightness in sculptures made by wood carvers and shadows of anxiety printed on the faces of locals.

LAND ART FESTIVAL AT RAUDONDVARIS MANOR: NATURE PLAYING TRICKS 2012-08-13

Austėja Masiokaitė

Works of land art invoke ambivalent emotions. On the one hand, they remind of a visit to an art gallery – one grows curious and tries to understand and interpret favourite works. On the other hand, one might feel uneasy and timid – a sudden appearance of such works somewhere in a forest or other natural surroundings arouses a scary feeling of nature playing an odd trick.

Ugnė Kraulaidytė

Tints of ecology at the Balta Gallery, a serious duet of artists at the Aukso Pjūvis Gallery, a retrospective dedicated to the 90th Anniversary of higher art education in Kaunas, illusions of virtual life by Jūratė Rekevičiūtė at the Meno Parkas Gallery, video art of twenty two artists at the same gallery, an exhibition of Arvydas Palevičius at Kaunas Artists House – these are several accents in the show panorama of Kaunas in June.

NONCOMMITTAL IMPRESSIONS FROM THEATRE LIFE OF KAUNAS (II) 2012-06-11

Theatres will soon end their seasons and will be closed until next autumn. Eternity of silence will last till September. These texts will also turn silent soon, therefore one must hurry up.

NONCOMMITTAL IMPRESSIONS FROM THEATRE LIFE OF KAUNAS (I) 2012-06-04

Jurga Tumasonytė

This text is dedicated to the theatrical life of Kaunas today: what kind of performances are shown, what kind of actors work, what latest passions and intrigues are, what kind of viewers visit theatre. Kaunas State Drama Theatre shows more than twenty performances a month. The major stage of the theatre has been reconstructed for a while now, so performances are shown in various chamber halls. Little rooms create the impression of a small theatre and its close relationship with viewers.

ABOUT THE SEA CIVILISATION 2012-05-15

Lina Japertaitė

M. K. Čiurlionis, who created a symphony poem ‘The Sea’ in 1903-7, found his chosen sea certainly magnificent. The newest performance of the same title based upon the symphony of Čiurlionis and created by the choreographer Birutė Letukaitė and Kaunas Aura Dance Theatre talks about the sea exhausted by people. The première was held at the Lithuanian National Drama Theatre and Kaunas Girstutis Culture Centre in May.

THE HARD-WORKING MUSEUM BEE 2012-04-12

Povilas Sigitas Krivickas

10 April is the centenary anniversary of the art critic Akvilė Mikėnaitė – one of the most hard working Lithuanian museum specialists. She dedicated her whole life to the research of Lithuanian folk art, especially, wooden sacred sculpture. She leaded intensive expeditions in Lithuania for forty years; she collected, organised and researched the Lithuanian folk art heritage.

A PROVOCATIVE ACTION 2012-04-05

Aleksandra Voronkova

Recently both politicians and artists speak about patriotism as the newest trend. It is hardly surprising that the conceptual artist Dainius Liškevičius too responds to the topic. One of the most recent of his works is the show ‘Without Anger’, displayed at the 101 Art Gallery in Kaunas. It provokes one’s mind and unconscious by raising issues of patriotism, identity and public spirit and stimulating the critique of these phenomena.

'THE DEPTHS'. TILL THE SENTENCE 2012-04-04

Dovilė Zelčiūtė

Seemingly, those sitting at the table do not have life anymore but they still have time to think about it, to dream and to mix fantasy with reality in the palette of guilt and hope. What is everyone’s reality in ‘The Depths’? What is my own reality? How true and pure is it, how much of brutality and sin are there? What is sin?

EN PASSANT - MAIRONIS AND NAPOLEON 2012-03-28

Aldona Ruseckaitė

The biography of our prominent poet Maironis is interesting: it seems he was somehow related to many noted personalities, and Napoleon Bonaparte was amongst them. This summer a hyperbolised event will be held for Kaunas citizens and guests. Two hundred years ago the famous Napoleon and his mighty army appeared in Kaunas to jump over the river Nemunas in order to conquer Russia.

THE KALEIDOSCOPE OF SHOWS IN KAUNAS 2012-03-23

Ugnė Kraulaidytė

E. Balsiukaitė-Brazdžiūnienė opens the door into the world of children in her photography series ‘Homo Ludens Forever’ and painting series ‘Complex of Hamlet’. In her photographs, the artist shows moments from a kindergarten in Porto (Portugal). The author draws attention to the rules created and changed during a children’s game: roles are being set and life is being rehearsed. Adolescence becomes the centre of attention in her paintings; the painter sees every youngster as Hamlet - a young, stubborn yet fragile rebel.

WHEN ALICE GETS LOST AND JAMES BOND APPEARS 2012-03-21

Toma Švažaitė

This other side of the line is the house of Audronė Petrašiūnaitė and I have been living in her ‘Red Room’ for a week already. A soft, pastel light and inhabitants of this house charmed me as Alice in the Wonderland. Playful cats, a white lamb, wine glasses, inwrought tablecloths and lush plants live in the rooms full of colours and intimacy. The everyday is sacred here and does not have the sense of boredom so usual for modern society.

A RECIPE: MAKING MEANINGS IN THE EVERYDAY 2012-03-20

Dovilė Vanagaitė

The textile artist Vita Gelūnienė’s tapestry ‘The Hunt of the Unicorn’ (2010-11) could be called a result of a monotonous work. The author chose a classical Gobelin weaving, which associates with a continuous interweaving of seams. A repetitive act becomes monotonous with clear links to the everyday. A colourful tapestry reveals domestic characters – a pregnant woman with slippers or a clockwork potbelly with a shopping bag.

L.DONSKIS OFFERS TO KNOW THE CULTURE OF THE OLD CONTINENT THROUGH THE LITTLE TOWNS 2012-03-08

Interviewed by Austėja Masiokaitė

The academician and public figure Leonidas Donskis compares Europe to a necklace consisting of very different parts. In his newest book ‘The Little Europe: a Map of an Aesthete’ he offers to examine the small beads of the necklace – towns that sometimes are invisible aside the large culture and power centres.

WAS THE BEST ARTWORK OF THE YEAR REALLY SELECTED? 2012-02-23

Ugnė Kraulaidytė

Apparently, the most positive aspect of the show is a great number of its visitors and the democracy of the event. However, the way of organising the exhibition becomes a flaw in terms of quality. Maybe it is time for organisers to renew, for solid artists to wake up and for the young ones to strengthen their positions.

HOUSE OF PERKŪNAS: BETWEEN LEGENDS AND REALITY 2012-02-01

Jolita Butkevičienė

A beautiful legend increases the attractiveness of the House of Perkūnas. The statuette found in the 19th century gave a unique aura and name to the building. However, talking about cultural heritage a clear line between human imagination and real historical facts must be drawn. Cultural heritage is a living witness of the past: once spoken it does not require new tales to be created.

ARCHITECT R. J. PALYS: 'CULTURE HERITAGE IS NOT JUST MASONRY OR ARCHS – IT IS HUMAN RELATIONS, SPACES, HABITS, TRADITIONS, MEMORABLE PLACES' 2012-01-25

Austėja Masiokaitė

The architect Rimvydas Palys compares problems of Kaunas’ architectural heritage to a sick patient: solving every case separately is more important than diagnosing from books. It is relevant to evaluate the situation in terms of space and context, not laws only. In his opinion, the patient can be cured – good contemporary architecture would help more than attempts to recreate the mighty past.

24 PRELUDES OF S. RACHMANINOFF AFTER L. GENIUŠAS 2012-01-24

Justina Paltanavičiūtė

The audience was listening breathlessly to L. Geniušas‘s performance from the first accord to the last one. S. Rachmaninoff‘s music is not easy; it is full of quite complex musical structural textures; there are no sweet melodies favouring the heart, so the series became a challenge not only for the performer but also the listeners.
