Romualdas Rakauskas was born in Akmenė, on August 9, 1941. He studied journalism at Vilnius University from 1959 to 1962. The photographer worked as a photo correspondent for the newspaper Literatūra ir Menas in 1961-63, for the magazine Mūsų Gamta in 1963-67. From 1967 he worked as the editor of illustrations department of the magazine Nemunas. Romualdas Rakauskas is a member of the Lithuanian Union of Art Photographers (from 1970) and a member of the Federation of International Art Photography (FIAP) from 1976.

The artist has received 5 Grand Prix, 3 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze medals and more than 70 other awards for his works.
