The famous architecture historian, collector and academic Algimantas Miškinis passed away in Kaunas, on the 10th of October 2015, at the age of 87. His collected works of art enriched Kaunas and Vilnius museums.
A. Miškinis was born in Kaunas on June 25, 1929. In 1954 he graduated from Kaunas Polytechnic Institute. In 1994 he became a Habilitated Doctor of Humanities; in 1996 – a member correspondent of Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.
A. Miškinis was one of the most productive Lithuanian urban historians, published over a thousand articles, wrote 32 books and co-authored 24.
“A. Miškinis was one of the most prominent urban planning researchers who had investigated this subject through the prism of the cultural heritage. He had conducted research for small towns and big cities that served as a basis to declare them heritage sites. That examination of urban heritage was carried out on a massive scale. Of course, he did not work alone, but with the whole team. However, the works of A. Miškinis form a really significant page in the history of Lithuanian architecture," said the head of the Architecture and Urban Planning Research Center of Kaunas University of Technology Vaidas Petrulis.
The academician focused on the development of small towns; from the formation of the settlements to their evolution into small towns and later cities; he explored their deeper development through the aspect of heritage.
