Kamane.lt has received information that the idea of the crematorium project caused doubts among architects that it had already been seen somewhere ostensibly. Is career started from plagiarism? Is this possible? Let the doubts be dispelled by the impartial comparison of information.

WINNERS OF THE CONTEST OF THE BEST DIPLOMA WORKS OF ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS

In brief: The winners of the traditional contest of the Lithuanian Union of Architect “The Best Diploma Works of Architecture Students of 2008” were students of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University Gilma Gylytė (project “]city[ Prison in Pagiriai, Vilnius“) and Vaiva Rinkūnaitė (project “Crematorium in Vilnius”). G.Gylytė’s project “]city[ Prison in Pagiriai, Vilnius“ was announced the best Master’s diploma work, and V.Rinkūnaitė’s project “Crematorium in Vilnius” was recognised the best Bachelor’s diploma work.

The diploma works were evaluated by a committee formed of professional architects that do not lecture in Lithuanian higher schools of architecture: A.Andrijauskas (Klaipėda), Š.Kiaunė (Kaunas), M.Nagelė (Vilnius) and V.Vilutytė (Vilnius). They elected the best works remarkable by their conceptuality, originality and aesthetical presentation.

The best Master’s diploma work – project “]city[ Prison in Pagiriai, Vilnius“ (G.Gylytė)

The author offered to move the present prison located near Lukiškių Square in the centre of Vilnius to the outskirts of the city. The new prison-town would have streets, building and a centre. The complex would be lower than the ground level; therefore, prisoners would see a high concrete wall expressing the punishment from all places.

“The author succeeded to create emotional load in a subtle manner using laconic means – this may be seen in the project solution and in the form of its presentation. The crematorium has its characteristic features and a logical functional scheme. This shows the potential for professionalism of V.Rinkūnaitė,“ a member of the committee Š.Kiaunė commented the work.

However, a doubt regarding the authenticity of the latter work was expressed. It may be found in the comparison of V.Rinkūnaitė’s project with a project of crematorium of the famous architecture company RCR. The text doubting the originality of V.Rinkūnaitė’s work may be found here: http://a2sm.blogas.lt/452844/geriausi-architekturos-studentu-baigiamieji-darbai-2008.html
