Jonas Vaitkus – a person who changed agriculture to theatre and cinema direction successfully

J.Vaitkus was born in Raseiniai region on May 20, 1944. In 1974 he graduated from Saint Petersburg State Theatre, Music and Cinematography Institute. He worked as the chief director of Šiauliai Drama Theatre for one year, and as an artistic director of Kaunas Drama Theatre from 1975. In 1976–1988 he was the chief director of Kaunas Drama Theatre, from 1988 – artistic director of the Lithuanian State Academic Drama Theatre, between 1990–1994 – the chief director of this theatre. Since 1988 he has worked as a lecturer at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre.

From 1991 he is doing pedagogical work in the USA, Norway, Denmark. He has directed performances in Norway, Sweden, Russia, Japan.

Performances directed by J.Vaitkus have been presented in international festivals in Germany, Russia, Georgia, Scotland, USA, France, Finland, Sweden.

Professor Jonas Vaitkus is the winner of the National Cultural and Art Prize (2003), “Christopher” prize of the Ministry of Culture, winner of Kaunas Fortune prize.

During the Soviet times the works of J.Vaitkus were evaluated by the Soviet Union state prize and the Lithuanian state prize.
