THE REBORN CHECHNYA SQUARE MIGHT CHANGE ITS NAME 0
According to the minutes of KAUET of September 3, 2008kamane.lt 2008 09 17
In brief: Kaunas Architecture and Urbanism Experts’ Council (KAUET) considered the technical project of ADAPTING THE CHECHNYA SQUARE TO CULTURE AND LEISURE NEEDS, which was approved with some notices. The design is created by Š.Kiaunė’s design company. The customer is Kaunas City Municipality. The meeting was headed by Linas Tuleikis.
According to Š.Kiaunė, the Chechnya Square is a derelict space in a densely populated Kalniečiai district of Kaunas that is located remotely from the city centre. It is a zone of leisure and culture of Kaunas residents. They started encouraging Kaunas Municipality to tidy up the square three years ago. Therefore, taking into regard the needs of the district residents, the Municipality initiated the project “Adaptation of the Chechnya Square to Culture and Leisure Needs in Kaunas”.
The main task of the reconstruction is to create an architecturally memorable modern public space, which would become the object of attraction in Kalniečiai district. It should be a democratic place for being, resting and entertaining oneself. The architects offer to change the name of the square. They plan to divide the territory of the square into three zones of intensiveness: passive rest, active rest and amphitheatre space for events.
After discussing the project and offering some adjustments, the council of experts decided to approve of it. The designers of the square should take into regard the following notices: to leave the name of the square and to search for the conceptual relation with Chechnya in the composition, to grant sense to the name; to improve the concept of green plants so that it would harmonise the scattered space; to specify the functional zoning of the square; to offer parking lots during events; to generate the general illumination concept; to improve the artistic decision of the console – illuminator.
The second project of THE AUTOMOBILE SERVICE CENTRE IN KAUNAS, SAVANORIŲ Ave. 408 (Designed by S. Mikštas (Miestprojektas AB), customer - Animodus UAB) was not considered due to the lack of material.
