According to the minutes of the meeting of KAUET of 2009 03 04,
www.kamane.lt, 2009 03 13In brief: Kaunas Architecture and Urbanism Experts’ Council (KAUET) dedicated the entire meeting to an untypical work: the discussion of works of finalists of the architectural contest that had already taken place “Integrated Science, Studies and Business Centre (Valley) “Confluence”. The customer of the object is Kaunas University of Technology.

While considering the projects, the projects were called by short numbers instead of the long codes:
1 – project with the code 752414
2 – project with the code 300150

5 – project with the code 746737
6 – project with the code 000060

The projects are presented by reviewers: Laurynas Byla by the urbane aspect and Jonas Audėjaitis by the architectural aspect. The urban development ideas of KTU students’ town are presented by Kęstutis Zaleckis.

K.Zaleckis: The students’ town development vision created in the Soviet times was not implemented fully. Therefore, there is a need to develop KTU now – the academic town becomes real.

Three alternatives were formed:
To leave everything as it is without any changes;
To direct the transport around by constructing a building with a character that would belong to KTU and the city;
To move out the Zoological Garden, this is a utopia.

The complex is formed of buildings of various periods: the Faculty of Chemistry built in the inter-war period, Soviet buildings – Faculties of Construction and Electrical Engineering.

The volume designed now should reflect contemporary architecture and become a sign. Statements of the study were used while choosing the place preparing conditions for the projects.

The ideas of the projects were presented and discussed by the experts’ council members. After the discussion they passed a decision.

DECISION

After discussing the 6 competitive works selected by the architectural contest “Integrated Science, Study and Business Centre (Valley) CONFLUENCE”, KAUET names the following projects as the ones that comply with the general vision of the city the best:
* Project with the code 000060 (named project 6 during the discussion) because of its laconic form, modern style, intriguing solution to dig off the level of the ground and to open up the altitude of the cellar to light (1st place awarded by 4 experts, 2nd – 2 experts, 3rd – 2 experts; 1 expert named the work as negative).
* Project with the code 245862 (named project 4 during the discussion) for the technological, dynamic volume and plastic composition (1st place awarded by 3 experts, 2nd – by 4 experts, 3rd – by 1 expert).
* Project with the code 300150 (named project 2 during the discussion) because of contextual matching and academic aesthetics (1st place awarded by 2 experts, 2nd – by 2 experts, 3rd – by 2 experts; 1 expert named the work as negative).
* Project with the code 122222 (named project 3 during the discussion) because of the outstanding features of the building and image of a “gate” (1st place awarded by 1 expert, 3rd – by 2 experts).
