Art spells 53
In brief: April is probably the busiest month in galleries and museums. Currently, upon visiting Kaunas galleries one can see jubilee, retrospective and quite magical phenomena; one can dive into meditation, look for light in the shadows, re-read the fairy tales, look at Kaunas from a different angle or get acquainted with art from another country.
National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum has organized a jubilee exhibition of Algimantas Švėgžda - My spells (the exhibition will be open until the 24th of April) - dedicated to the 75th birth anniversary of the artist. In his works, A. Švėgžda is making a connection with Eastern philosophy, which allowed the artist to get to know his inner world and his relationship to Lithuania. According to the curator of the exhibition Iveta Dabašinskienė, "In the context of Lithuanian art history A. Švėgžda can stand next to M. K. Čiurlionis and L. Truikys, who had also touched upon the oriental aesthetics with their works, but A. Švėgžda has also remained distinctive."
The quiet atmosphere is created by a painter from Vilnius Vytenis Lingys, whose retrospective exhibition The light of the shadow (will be open until May 1st) illuminates the Kaunas Picture Gallery with a magical and surreal mood typical to this artist. In addition to paintings and drawings, over the years, V. Lingys has created set design for films, various decorations and costumes for Šiauliai, Kaunas, Vilnius Youth and St. Petersburg theatres. Overall, the artist is diverse, intriguing, but not rebellious, full of light, which the people of today need so much more.
Meanwhile, Gaiva Paprastoji, in her painting exhibition Diaries about the future (exhibition will be open at the Kaunas County Public Library until the 25th of April) presents painted stories of the future. Through images and symbols artist creates a fairy tale-like atmosphere, more precisely - magical realism.
Time that has passed is relevant to the painter Rimvydas Alechnavičius, who has organized an exhibition Retro pulse at the Kaunas Artists' House (the exhibition will be open until the 22nd of April). Author temporarily moves from the present to the past and remembers it through his paintings (retro in Latin means "back"), emphasizing Kaunas and the architecture of its neighborhoods.
Knowledge is also important to the Georgian artist Guram Khetsuriani who presents his works at the Georgian House of Art and Taste (exhibition will be open until the 30th of April). It is important to the author to give meaning to things that might disappear in a few years or moments; he wants to draw people's attention to the destruction of buildings and nature.
