A joyful event – ‘Soiree of Scoffers’ – was held at Kaunas Artists House on April Fool’s Day. The Scoffers Club celebrated the 40th Anniversary last year. Artists-caricaturists and writers-humourists have always flocked round it.
Seemingly, those sitting at the table do not have life anymore but they still have time to think about it, to dream and to mix fantasy with reality in the palette of guilt and hope. What is everyone’s reality in ‘The Depths’? What is my own reality? How true and pure is it, how much of brutality and sin are there? What is sin?
Recently both politicians and artists speak about patriotism as the newest trend. It is hardly surprising that the conceptual artist Dainius Liškevičius too responds to the topic. One of the most recent of his works is the show ‘Without Anger’, displayed at the 101 Art Gallery in Kaunas. It provokes one’s mind and unconscious by raising issues of patriotism, identity and public spirit and stimulating the critique of these phenomena.
10 April is the centenary anniversary of the art critic Akvilė Mikėnaitė – one of the most hard working Lithuanian museum specialists. She dedicated her whole life to the research of Lithuanian folk art, especially, wooden sacred sculpture. She leaded intensive expeditions in Lithuania for forty years; she collected, organised and researched the Lithuanian folk art heritage.
The Anime Nights – the Japanese animation event – was held in Kaunas on 20-21 April already for the seventh time. Everyone who dreamed of watching animation all night long or even longer could finally make their dream come true.
There is more and more light in Kaunas exhibition halls now presenting the classical graphics of Egidijus Rudinskas, authentically spiritual works of Albina Žiupsnytė, sculptures of Leonas Strioga, experiments of the ceramic ‘Spring’ show, conceptual ideas of Agnė Deveikytė-Liškauskienė, Jovita Aukštikalnytė-Varkulevičienė and Saulius Paliukas and the painting duet of a father and son – both Vytautas Povilaitis.
The performance ‘A Journey towards the Sun’ is to be premiered at Kaunas State Puppet Theatre on 27-28 May. It is a joint project ‘Between Lithuania and Sankt Petersburg’, supported by the Culture Fund of Lithuania. The international KukArt Puppet Theatre Festival also participates in the project as a partner. The author and director of the performance Boris Konstantinov, scenographer Viktor Antonov and composer Denis Shadrin are the winners of the Golden Mask and Golden Soffit awards (Russia). 1
