The patriarch of Lithuanian architecture and history of architecture, offspring of the famous family of counts Zubovai, son-in-law of Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis Vladimiras (Vladys) Zubovas died on the 12th of May, 2007 at the age of 97.
Vladimiras (Vladys) Zubovas was born in Halle (Germany) on the 6th of December, 1909. He was an architect, historian of architecture. He graduated from Šiauliai Boys Gymnasium in 1928, completed Berlin Higher Technical School in 1934. He worked at Kaunas War Flats Administration (1935-1940) and in the joint-stock company Pienocentras (1940-1941).
He was an architect of Kaunas City Planning Department during the World War II. In 1944-1950 he lectured at Vytautas Magnus University. In 1950-1958 he worked in various Kaunas design organisations, in 1959-1967 – at the Institute of Construction and Architecture. In 1967-1969 he was a lecturer of the Art Institute, Kaunas University Extension.
Buildings designed in Kaunas: private house of the writer B.Sruoga, Oak Forest Park, Amphitheatre of the Song Valley, etc.
He has written a monograph “Tomas Žebrauskas and his Pupils” (1986), announced publications about Lithuanian Baroque, Kaunas old town.
V.Zubovas shared some material about the family of Zubovai, their life and activity in Šiauliai district. He formed the genealogical tree of the Zubovai family and has written memoirs “What Remained in the Memory” (both heritage objects are stored at Šiauliai County P.Višinskis Public Library). V.Zubovas was awarded with the Cross of Saving Dying People (1999).
V.Zubovas died in 2007 in Kaunas. He is buried in Petrašiūnai Cemetery.
